The Adventures of Tom and Barard

Title:The Adventures of Tom and Barard
Category: slash.
Rating: NC-17 for sexual content. Contains violence, some references to non-consensual sex, and lots of hurt/comfort. I make no money from these stories, and give grateful thanks to JRR Tolkien for providing us with such a richly imagined world to play in.

Part 3 of the three part inset chapter (Faros/Catos)has now been posted and can be found here. In addition to the betas who have already been thanked, I'd like to thank Elayne for her grammar help on the inset chapter. Remaining mistakes, as always, are mine. If you have enjoyed the whole Tom and Barard adventure, please tell your friends. :)

Inset chapter part 1 can be found here, and part 2 here.

Earlier chapters can be found here

And thank you for poking me with a stick and making me do some rewriting. :)

This story just keeps getting better and better Elenya - if that's possible for something as compelling as this has always been! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderfully complex and fascinating view of another Middle Earth culture.I think you know by now that I've loved every word - more please!!
Elaine

Thanks, Elaine. :) You've given me such lovely feedback... :) :) :) Have a great holiday.

Oh Elenya, I loved this. It was warm, tender, loving and hot. I especially loved how Catos arranged for Patros' funeral to try to help with Faros' grief.

I am so glad you added these extra Chapters. I have enjoyed them so much. Thank you for this wonderful story, and may your muse live on!

[identity profile] elenya54.livejournal.com 2006-08-11 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, Addie. I know the story hasn't had a big audience, but I've loved every minute of writing it. Faros wants me to write his story from a youngster, and Catos keeps dropping hints about what happens in Khand, but I'm working on something else at the moment. I know where it's going, I'm just not quite sure what's going to happen when it gets there... :D

I don't know what you were worried about. That was hot! And I know you said there were only three parts to the inset, but I want more!

Watching Catos take charge in picking the guard was fun, as was Faros's impressed reaction. The funeral was touching and so full of detail that I felt I was there. So often, we don't realize how much we're grieving until we're allowed to do so. That was good for Faros to be able to put that part of his life behind him.

Thank you so much for this wonderful story. When I have time, I shall have to go back and reread this story in one go.

And I second Addie. May your muse live on!

Ah, but that was the redrafted version. :D All praise to betas...

Watching Catos take charge in picking the guard was fun, as was Faros's impressed reaction.

Faros's reaction was very spontaneous. :D I hadn't planned that at all, although I did want the readers to see how mature and capable Catos now was.

I love it when people tell me they reread my stories. I hope you enjoy it as much second time around. :)

(((((Elenya)))))
Another great chapter. I could read on and on. I love this tale so much. Hopefully your muses will urge you to write more.

I had written this before but somehow LJ "swallowed" my comment because I was not logged in (don't know why LJ did log me out in the first place)

Hi Elenya

Just want to tell you that I'm at chapter 14 now and am enjoying every minute of their adventure :-)

And also to point you to this site. Have you seen the lovely paintings here before? There's one of Frodo holiding a baby and it reminds me so much of ATIH with Frodo holding his little Elanor!

[identity profile] elenya54.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, Lin. I'd not seen that site. That's a lovely picture of Frodo and Elanor. :)

I'm glad to hear you're catching up. I didn't realise you'd been left behind...

Hello Elenya!

Here's a short reminder that it is your turn to make your Hobbit Month Post on Sunday August 20. Please remember to post the banner at the top of your post by using the link below and replacing all () with <>.

Also, please do not flock the post! Thank you! I'm looking forward to what you are going to post! :D

I should be able to post from my daughter's flat in London. I wasn't expecting Middle-earth news to link to the "essay" after Aratlithiel asked if she could put it on her site. I'll see about posting something else, as well.

[identity profile] frodosweetstuff.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, I haven't had the time to pay much attention to flist and I missed the announcement in Middle-Earth News. Went and read your excellent essay now. I think it makes a lot of valid points - I only wish it had been longer!! :)

And I must say I have always been a bit disappointed by Sam's response in CU to Frodo's description of what happened. Oh well.

Anyway, I hope finding something else to post doesn't cause too much inconvenience. :(

That's why I put the word essay in quotes, since it really isn't an essay, it was posted on a message board early in 2003, so it has some seeds of my thinking for ATIH. I sent it to Carole because there were a lot of similarities in her thinking in her Counterpoint series and she asked if she could put it up on her website. I'll still post it on Saturday, maybe with my ATIH letter from Frodo to Sam and a little surprise that won't be finished, but I'll dangle it in a tantalising way. :D It's not so much about Frodo and Sam... yet. :D

btw, read the inset chapters for The Adventures of Tom and Barad yesterday and oooooh, was blown away. :) Will leave feedback later today!

Thank you, Stef :) :) :) I'm glad you enjoyed. I'll look forward to your feedback. :)

I haven't forgotten but I just haven't had the time yet. Will be back later.

I love this story TO DEATH. Catos has become *such* a compelling character! I hope against hope that you'll write more F/C someday, because I would eat it up. You've dropped such tantalizing hints about the journey to Khand--I hope you follow up on those!

Of course, Faros's story would be fascinating as well, esp. when he meets Patros...

Oh, what the heck. Whatever you write about these two, I'll read it! Thanks for sharing this excellent tale.

[identity profile] elenya54.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Catos has become *such* a compelling character!

:) Thank you. He wasn't in my original story plan at all. I'm not sure why he suddenly appeared in the cart to look after poor Tom, but I'm glad he did. In fact, having written that, I went to look at my original story plan, and had a good laugh as I tried to recognise the story as it turned out :D

[identity profile] elycia.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! I cannot even BEGIN to imagine this story without him. How would Tom have survived the trip to Hafar without Catos, let alone any of the other twenty-five crises Catos averted? And Catos has added such a delightful air to the story--like when he's telling the tale of Faros's arriving with the third army. I'm glad he appeared in the cart, invited or not!

It's interesting, though, how our first ideas of a story often look nothing like the finished product. I go back and read first drafts sometimes and think to myself, "WHAT were you drinking when you wrote this?" It pays to save notes and draft versions, if only to remind ourselves why editing and rewriting are important. :-)

Oh, and I just want to plead a little more for the Khand stories...

[identity profile] elenya54.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I keep all my earlier drafts - after all, I might find I like them better - but it's the plan that I find changes. The same happened in ATIH. The original plan is, well, to be honest, pathetic, but it *was* a starting point without which the rest would have not have followed. I sympathise with Tolkien as to "Bingo" and Trotter" being made public by his son - I would *not* want any eyes to see my early planning stages but mine. :D
